Black hole

Escape speed

Contours trace how escape speed changes around a nonrotating black hole. The surface visualizes escape speed, rather than the shape of spacetime.

Nested pale contours ripple into a layered, shell-like form.

Fourier shell

Angular harmonics

Angular harmonics combine into nested, closed contours. Repeating waves shape the edges into a shell-like form, constructive and destructive interference sculpting beautiful standing wave patterns

Electromagnetic wave

Perpendicular oscillations

Electric and magnetic fields oscillate at right angles to each other and to their direction of travel. Paired waves reveal the geometry of electromagnetic wave propagation.

Dipole

Magnetic field lines

Magnets, amirite?? Magnetic field lines curve around an ideal dipole in a balanced, symmetric arrangement. Their paired loops give visible form to an otherwise invisible field.
